Our Maps and Books

When Joe started talking to Alaska visitors, especially those on ships, he realized that most could not find where they were on a map. Joe’s answer: a waterproof map with ship routes marked, so that the Captain could say, “We are now at Mile 242 on your map.” Wicked clever, eh?
Filled with photographs and arrows and paragraphs of Alaska stories, Joe’s maps quickly became THE Alaska map to take north with you.
Then in 2012, Joe teamed up with a talented filmmaker Dan Kowalski, also a commercial fisherman, and began traveling around in Dan’s boat to significant places to film short videos about what made them notable. By putting icons on the map showing where the videos were filmed and putting the videos up on YouTube, organized by Mile number, he and Dan created a unique way of sharing their many Alaska stories and adventures with Alaska visitors.

Joe wrote The Alaska Companion book/map set with text keyed to the Milemarker System (Seattle is Mile Zero). The popularity of the book stems from the fact that in addition to being a full guide for Alaska visitors, it is full of Joe’s wonderful Alaska stories and anecdotes from his decades of travel and work around Alaska. Note: the map included in the book is identical to the waterproof map, however it is printed on paper and not waterproof. If you want the waterproof map you have to order it separately from Amazon, or purchase it at the many shops in Alaska where it is offered..
Joe’s Pocket Guide to Alaska Cruise Ports is more than a where to shop, what to do guide. Joe figured that since most folks had less than a day at these ports, it was important to include some of the rich stories that makes Alaska such a special place, and that otherwise they might never hear. Plus it fits in your shirt pocket and at $5.99 hardly even makes a dent in your wallet.
